Peckham experiments (with video)
My first experiment is something like a mobius strip, which records my bus ride on 12 on Peckham road. I found it interesting because bus 12 would look like it goes past Peckham, yet sooner or later it would make a sudden turn and you'll realize you would be right in the middle of Peckham Rye Lane!
I recorded my bus ride here:
The mobius strip. It records a daily routine of many Peckham people. Perhaps something that gives them safety?
It can be folded and opened.
The extra strips are the U-turns/ unexpected turns the bus took.
The strip turned out to be quite fragile (for some reason the strips keep detaching) and confusing, since there's no real starting point as the bus routine can keep looping.
Here's a good "ride-through":
My second experiment is this concertina of palimpsests, drawn on scrap paper. However, it is not related to Peckham and Adrian suggested that I do so with Peckham ephemera. I think so too and this would be a try out for creating textures and the half-transparent paint on printed words/material.
I realized white acrylic is effective in half-covering the background, to create a semi-solid background for what is happening in front.
I realized that too many elements in the foreground would crowd the background and make the images look less natural. Nevertheless, this concertina was scribbled on and it could be appropriated into something more refined and well-thought of. I also like how the concertina resemble layers of an environment.
Both of my experiments experiment with folding and the "layer" aspect, akin to the concept of different layers of needs.
